At the heart of the museum is the Bodhi Tree Experience, conceived as an immersive space where visitors move beyond information and enter the story of the Buddha. The Bodhi Tree forms the symbolic centre of the installation, representing the place beneath which Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment and became the Buddha.
The specially created film follows Siddhartha’s journey of awakening — from his life as a prince and his encounters with human suffering, to renunciation, meditation and finally enlightenment beneath the Bodhi Tree. Presented in a 300-degree immersive theatre, high-quality projections surround the visitors, while special surround sound creates a powerful sense of being within the narrative rather than simply watching it.
The physical environment is also part of the storytelling. Visitor seats are crafted from real tree trunks, extending the natural character of the Bodhi Tree into the theatre itself and creating the feeling of sitting within a contemplative landscape. Star projections across the floor add another layer of movement and wonder, allowing the visual experience to continue beneath the visitors’ feet.
The experience begins through a Sanchi Stupa-inspired doorway, which slides open to reveal the theatre beyond. From the gateway of Sanchi to the Bodhi Tree, every element — the real-wood seating, 300-degree film, floor projections, lighting and immersive surround sound — works together to transform Siddhartha’s journey into a memorable sensory experience and reinforce the museum’s central idea: “Sanchi – The Eternal Light”.
